GREENS SLAM COUNCIL BACKTRACK ON BUS REGULATION

23rd October 2006

Sheffield Green Party today condemned council leaders for their reluctance to apply for a Quality Bus Contract. The newsletter which accompanies the Plan 4 Transport for Sheffield report to cabinet on Wednesday reveals that 'the Council are deciding whether to seek Government approval to set up bus 'Quality Contracts'' (the legal route to bus regulation). This is over 20 months since council leaders gave First 6 months to improve or face the city's bus services being put out to tender, in which there have been service cuts and numerous fare rises.

Green transport spokesperson Robert Murphy commented, 'Last week, even local Conservatives were calling for Quality Contracts, and they deregulated the buses in the first place! Surely it's now time for action not words from Sheffield City Council".
