The Sheffield Community Renewables Group is very interested in The Torrs Hydro Renewable project as indicated below – especially for the way it combines community owned low carbon energy generation with re- investment of the profits into supporting local environmental sustainability.

We are organising a trip from Sheffield to their one year on exhibition (Jan 26th). We are also hoping to purchase a (small!) stake in the project. We have raised about half of the £250 required to do this, but we only have a week to go! Any contributions would be very welcome (the application will be made jointly by those contributing to the share).

Torrs Hydro Renewable Energy Scheme

Torrs Hydro New Mills Limited was established for the specific purpose of owning the Torrs Hydro Electric scheme by Torr Weir on the River Goyt in New Mills in the High Peak of Derbyshire.

A share of the revenue from the scheme will be re-invested to help regenerate the local community and to promote environmental sustainability.

The scheme is to be part funded by grants and loans, but to make the project happen they still need to raise a fair bit of money. They are on the look out for investors. Shareholders will receive a modest rate of interest, but more importantly they will be helping to make a difference. Stakes from as little £250 up to £20000 are on offer. The Share offer closes on the 31st January.

On Saturday 26th January at New Mills Heritage Centre, there is an opportunity to meet the people behind the project. A model of the screw will be on display. The Torrs Tours will be going and you can even hand in your share applications. (More info: http://www.torrshydro.co.uk/)

Teachers requred!

The renewables group is scoping out options to support one or more local school renewable energy projects. Vital to their plan is the involvement of one or more schools!

Are there any eco-minded teachers out there, who would be interested in linking up with the group and working towards developing a renewable energy project at their school? The group is rapidly gaining momentum. It already has good links within the local renewable energy community.
