Local Green Party calls for more
controls on houses becoming flats and bedsits
11 August 2009
Sheffield Green Party has pressed central Government for stronger
planning controls on the number of properties being turned into
bedsits and other types of houses in multiple occupation (HMO).
In response to a recent national consultation exercise, the Greens
argue that areas like Broomhill could have too many students and
other temporary residents unless Sheffield Council has more powers
available.
Green Councillor Bernard Little said We think Sheffield
needs sustainable and balanced communities. Students and other
young people bring many benefits for local areas. However, an
area with a high proportion of students can change character inappropriately.
Also, some students do cause problems, such as unacceptable levels
of noise and lack of care with rubbish.
He added We believe that greater control of HMOs would
bring considerable benefits for communities. Also, better enforcement
of noise and other nuisance is needed.
The Green Party specifically wants Sheffield Council to have
planning powers in relation to the conversion of properties into
accommodation for three or more unrelated people, which is a lower
figure than at present.
We are pleased that the 12 August meeting of Sheffield Councils
Cabinet will be considering a recommendation by council officers
which is very much in line with our submission to central Government.
