Greens say Lib Dems need to live
up to promises
27th April 2009
The Greens' say they are disappointed by the
Lib Dems' performance
after a year in power.
On Post Offices, Coun Bernard Little said,
"The Greens are arguing
for council services to be transferred to the nine branches the
Post Office
would allow us to re-open to make them viable. Despite Paul Scriven's
promise to fight for post offices to his last breath, two weeks
ago they
announced only two proposed re-openings. Essex County Council
have overcome
many obstacles to reopen closed branches. Sheffield can do the
same but it needs political leadership."
On energy, leader of the Green group Coun Jillian
Creasy said, "We
need wind farms to reduce carbon emissions - climate change will
alter
the countryside far more than a wind farm. Yet the Lib Dems abandoned
a feasibility study for Westwood Country Park. We would like to
know how
the Lib Dems in Sheffield plan to meet regional renewable energy
targets."
On public transport, she added, "We see
reliable, re-regulated public
transport as the key to tackling the city's congestion. The Lib
Dems'
failure to fully support bus and tram gates at Hillsborough, the
Wicker and Glossop Rd jeopardises their partnership with bus companies
and will make re-regulation less likely to be successful."
"Finally, the downturn in the economy
means they need to go back to
the drawing board for the New Retail Quarter and economic plans
for
the city. A Green Council would focus on supporting the truly
local
economy, such as Post Offices and local-grown businesses, instead
of
multinationals such as supermarkets."
