Greens slam development plan
4th March 2009
Sheffield's Green Cllrs have refused to support
the adoption of a Core Strategy for the city because it does not
take into account the rapidly changing economic situation and
the threat of climate change.
Bernard Little said,
"We didn't support the plan when it came
to council a year ago and, since
the credit crunch it is even less fit for purpose. The government
inspector has asked for some minor amendments, but really it needs
a complete overhaul. We need a plan which will make Sheffield
a viable city despite the economic downturn and global pressure
for resources including food and fuel.
"We don't need lots of speculative buildings,
often in inappropriate
locations, designed by developers to give them a quick profit.
Our planning
system should aim to maintain and improve our existing stock of
buildings,
including making them more energy efficient.
"The plan should support the sectors that
will grow in the future, including
manufacture of renewable energy. Local business, shops and public
services should be close to where people live. Good public transport
and access by foot or bicycle will mean that people do not have
to use their cars.
"Lastly, we must look after the green
parts of the city, not just because
they look good, but also to minimise the risk of flooding and
land degradation.
