Greens
urge support for Sustainable Communities 15th
October 2008 Sheffield Green Party will be supporting
a workshop about how to make use of the new Sustainable Communities Act. The workshop
is being run by the Sheffield branch of Unlock Democracy (formerly Charter 88)
on the evening of Thursday 30th October.
Sheffield
and the Sustainable Communities Act A
Workshop Thursday 30 October 6.00pm to 9.00pm Leader
Ron Bailey Quaker Meeting House, St James Street Sheffield
is one of the first, if not the first, of the local authorities to opt into the
provisions of the SCA: all three political parties supported the Green Party initiative
at the Council meeting on September 3rd. The Act is designed
to facilitate a shift in power over local matters from central to local government,
and requires the active involvement of local people. The triggering mechanisms
are all local, and the workshop aims to explain these. It
is intended for councillors, campaigners, other community leaders and anyone with
an interest, to help us think through how and for what purpose the Act can be
used. Ron Bailey is the Unlock Democracy Campaign Director,
and under the campaign title, "Local Works" (now a project of Unlock
Democracy), was central in the campaign to have the private member's bill carried
in Parliament. He is keen to work with us ensure the success of Sheffield's initiative.
Numbers are limited to 30, so please book early. There
is no charge for the workshop but a contribution towards costs, on the night,
would be very welcome Tea and coffee on arrival Please
