Time to Vote Green
8th April 2008
The Greens launched their local
election campaign on Saturday (April 12th) on London Rd, where a pedestrian crossing
is to be installed later this year.Extra money for pedestrian crossings throughout
the city was just one of the Green Party's achievements this year. They have used
their influence in a hung Council to maximum advantage, securing concessions from
Labour which will improve life for the people of Sheffield and help the environment. Central
Ward candidate Rob Murphy said, "Greens are the real alternative to Labour
and the Lib Dems. We see beyond the gloss of Labour 'successes' and actually get
something done. If you want more than a petition, but a real crossing on London
Rd, vote Green. If you want weather-tight houses as well as new kitchens and bathrooms
on the Council estates, vote Green. Voters who are fed up with 'New Labour' and
its addiction to war, nuclear power, and the privatisation of health and education
are turning to the Greens. "We understand the green
agenda. A better environment is not just about better parks and planting more
bulbs, although these are important. It's about better public transport and housing,
and a strong local economy. These improvements reduce pollution and carbon emissions
and make life cheaper and easier for us all." Councillor
Jillian Creasy added, "We have great chance of getting a third Green Councillor
in Central. But we are also challenging the other parties in Nether Edge,Walkley,
Gleadless, Manor, and Broomhill, where our candidate, Rob Cole, came a strong
second last year. The Young Greens group which he founded has also been active,
for example campaigning to get rid of plastic bags at Sheffield University".
After the election the Greens will continue to push for
improvements to transport, housing and the local economy and to work hard for
communities in Sheffield. Coun Creasy said, "Ther is a good chance that we
will continue to hold the balance of power after May 1st, and voting on an issue
by issue basis and working constructively with whoever supported our policies
has proved the best way of delivering real gains for people and the environment. ENDS |
