Greens
call for "Affordable, sustainable " timber framed houses
8th April
Green
Councillor Bernard Little has visited a timber frame factory of Oakworth Homes
Ltd (Crown Works, Rotherham Road, Sheffield) in search of good quality, affordable
housing that is easy to heat. Coun Little said, "I
have been very impressed with the quality of the construction of locally-built
timber frames houses. This could be used to create affordable social housing
that is quick to build, made from sustainable materials and is well designed. "Nearly
three quarters of people in the developed world live in houses built with
a timber frame, and once clad with a brick outer walls, they look just like
any other house. All the wood used is from well managed environmentally sound
forests. They can be built up to seven stories high and are very easy to insulate
to the best low carbon building standards. "If the
government helps local firms to supply the timber frames, it will lead to
a lot of local employment in highly skilled and satisfying jobs." ENDS Promoted
