Green statement on Nuclear Power
go ahead
10th January 2008
Bernard Little, Sheffield
Green Party Councillor, said, "We need massive investment
now in energy conservation and renewable energy to tackle climate
change and provide a secure energy source. At best a new generation
of nuclear power stations can reduce carbon emissions by 4% by
2025. This is too little too late. We need big reductions in greenhouse
gas emissions within eight years now if we are to avoid the worst
impact of climate change.
"High quality uranium deposits are limited
in quantity and Britain will be dependent on overseas suppliers.
The problems of possible terrorist attack on a nuclear power station
and of safe storage of radioactive waste has not been solved.
"If the Government was really committed
to offshore wind and wave power as well as nuclear as it claims,
places like Sheffield, with its engineering skills, would be gearing
up now for the thousands of lasting jobs that would be created.
This is not happening."
