Green's New Year Message
28th December 2007
Sheffield Green Party
have promised to keep up the pressure on the Council to improve
housing and transport and make the Sheffield's economy greener
in their New Year message to the city. The Green selected two
new co-chairs, Jill Lancaster and David Hayes, at their AGM
in December who are looking forward to leading the party into
the challenges of 2008.
Jill Lancaster said, "2007 has
been a good year for us. Our Councillors have made a real difference,
from pushing the Council to repair leaky roofs on the Lansdowne
and Hanover estates to reforming Full Council meetings so decisions
can be made more efficiently.
"The Greens as a party have campaigned
for the Sheffield's Economic Strategy to include a carbon
footprint of the city. This means finding out how much C02 we
are responsible for, both within the city and through trade
and investment abroad, so we can reduce it. And we will continue
to put pressure on the Council to prioritize buses, walking
and cycling in their budgets. We need more pedestrian crossings,
not wider roads and pollution.
David Hayes added, "The
recent climate change talks in Bali failed to set carbon reduction
targets which would prevent a dangerous 2C rise in global temperatures.
So it's down to us to find ways of living on this planet without
ruining it for future generations."
