Green comment on Woodhead rail
link motion
2nd December 2007
Sheffield Green Party
will this week be supporting plans to safeguard the possibility
of reopening the Woodhead Tunnel rail link to Manchester.
They see the rail link as an alternative
to the troubled Mottram/Tintwistle bypass plans, and are supporting
a motion to full council on Wednesday calling for a study into
how this could be acheived.
Green Party Transport Spokesperson Rob Murphy
commented,
'A new rail link to Manchester is sorely
needed to deal with congestion on both the railways and roads
between the two cities. Re-opening the Woodhead link would bring
real environmental benefits to the cities and the National Park
in between.'
He added 'Compared to the troubled plans
for the Mottram/Tintwistle bypass with its huge projected increases
in traffic levels and associated problems, it's a no-brainer.'
