Calls to ban Foie Gras

2nd December 2007

Sheffield Green Party is asking the City Council to take a stand on foie gras, which is a so-called delicacy made from the swollen livers of ducks and geese which have been force fed. The practice is banned in the UK but we still import and eat large quantities. York City Council recently sent a strong message to government and local retailers to take action and there has been a lot of media coverage.

Green Party Cllr Creasy said, “Producing foie gras is an extreme version of factory farming, on a smaller scale but even more cruel than battery turkeys, chickens and eggs. It wouldn’t be a great hardship for the few people who eat it to give it up and the retail industry and restaurants could find alternatives. Christmas seems a good time to be sending out a message about being kinder to edible birds and we hope the motion is passed.”
