Greens comment on CPT

28th November 2007

Sheffield Green Party's spokesperson on Transport, Rob Murphy, said,

"This report is a desperate effort by the bus operators to avoid regulation. The CPT's attempts to portray partnerships as the way forward ignores the evidence of the last 20 years.

The exploitation of passengers has brought operators excessive profits but decimated South Yorkshire's once proud bus service.

Talk of a potential increase of 10 million passenger journeys pales into insignificance compared to the loss of hundreds of millions journeys since deregulation.

Regulation by 'Quality Contracts' is essential for an integrated tranport system as they would enable sensible timetabling, long-term planning and stability to return to the network."
