"In town without my car"
day
20th September 2007
Green Party Councillors
Bernard Little said, "We welcome In Town Without
My Car Day."
"The two of us Green Councillors cycle
every day in the city centre. We need this initiative to extend
to every day of the year if we are to really to begin to make
a dent in tackling climate change, congestion in the city, our
oil addiction and the obesity crisis. Hopefully the Carbon Quids
idea will take off and Sheffield's green currency will show
that as a city we can lead the way in becoming a low carbon
city."
"I have a public transport pass issued
by the City Council to use on the bus and tram. It is good to
use public transport as a stress free alternative to the car.
The two of us are members of the City WizzGo Car Club, which
means we can when necessary share a car to out of the way areas
of the city without the need for ownership. We do recognise
that for many people walking needs to be encouraged through
local pedestrian crossing and planning a city that reduces the
need to travel in the first place. This is why we support local
shops, post offices and community schools and are pressing the
government to re-regulate the buses so that being without a
car is a real alternative for all. "
"More than one car free day a year?
If we are serious about saving the planet and our health lets
have it at least every week! If other European Cities are doing
better than us why can't we take a lead?"
