ID Cards criticised by City Council

25th July 2007

A Green motion criticising the introduction of Identity Cards was passed by the City Council at its meeting on 25th July. The motion, which was proposed by Green Party Cllr Jillian Creasy and seconded by Lib Dem Leader Cllr Paul Scriven, set out the problems associated with ID cards. It also called on the Council to act on its beliefs by affiliating to the “NO2ID” campaign and to promising to take no part in pilot schemes or using ID cards to access council services. But the Conservative and Independent Cllrs weakened the motion by voting against taking any action to back up these statements.

Cllr Creasy said: “We were pleased that, with Lib Dem support, our motion was accepted. We expected Labour to support its national policy, but it is very disappointing that Cllrs Anne Smith and Martin Davis wouldn’t act on their beliefs. If they think ID cards are wrong, why not commit the Council to supporting the campaign against them? “
