Outdoor Heaters and Smoking Ban

1st July 2007

Green Party Councillor Bernard Little said.

"A surge in outdoor heater use in pubs and cafes could cause a huge increase in Sheffield's carbon emissions now that the smoking ban has come into force. I welcome the the Mayor of London's backing for action against patio heaters to prevent this happening. I will be calling on Sheffield Council to do the same."

"Patio heaters emit three tonnes of carbon dioxide per heater per year. This is nearly half of the annual emissions of the average Sheffielder.

"Outdoor heaters are an extraordinary waste of energy and carbon emissions. They do more to heat the climate than they do for people. For the sake of the climate, I urge pub and café owners to kick the patio heater habit."
