Greens Support local Farmer's Markets

24th April 2007

Rob Cole, Green Party Candidate for Broomhill was joined by other local members to do their weekly shop at Sheffield’s Farmers' Market this Sunday, 22 April. The Green Party support local farmers' markets because they believe it is important to buy local produce and support local businesses.

Rob Cole said “It’s really important to support local shops and services. This supports the local economy by circulating money, benefiting local businesses and local people. Buying local produce also keeps food miles down, helping to keep CO2 emissions to a minimum and combat climate change.”

“People should avoid supermarkets wherever you they as they leech money from the local economy. £1 in every £7 spent goes through a Tesco till and out of this, over 90% leaves the local community. Buying local produce also helps us keep in touch with the seasons. Sheffield Farmers' Market sells a wonderful range of high quality produce. It’s a shame it doesn’t happen every week.”
