Young Greens say "Use your
vote!"
20th April 2007
Broomhill Green Party
candidate Rob Cole joined by fellow Young Greens outside Sheffield
City Library Theatre on Thursday 19th April to highlight the need
for people to use their vote in upcoming City Council elections
on May the 3rd.
The theatre is currently staging Making
Mayhem: Sheffield Suffragettes, a play depicting the personal
struggle of a Sheffield member of the Suffragette movement to
attain the vote for women in the early 20th century. Campaigners
outside the theatre held a banner saying Women died for
the vote use yours.
Rob Cole said of the event Voter turnout
in Local Elections is often as low as 20-30%. Women died and were
imprisoned in order to get the vote for women. Politics is important
to peoples lives because it directly affects our welfare
and society. Far too many people are disengaged and much more
must be done to involve them. The Young Greens support proportional
representation and want the voting age lowered to 16 to engage
young people in politics at an earlier age.
Rob came a clear second in Broomhill ward last
year, and is pushing hard for election this year. The Green Party
have candidates standing in every ward in Sheffield.
