Greens Welcome Support for local
Economy
13th April 2007
The Green Party has
welcomed the Council's bid to the Government's Local Enterprise
Growth Initiative, which aims to improve local communities by
revitalising their economies. But they warn that businesses are
under threat from too many residential developments and that local
people need to be given a say in the scheme. Sheffield's bid to
Local Enterprise Growth Initiative is called "Generation
Enterprise"
Green Councillor Bernard Little said, "
'Generation Enterprise' is an excellent move towards stimulating
and sustaining local business and enterprise in the deprived parts
of the city. Raising the aspirations of young people is particularly
important.
"However there are concerns. Growing business
are threatened by the lack of new business space because there
is so much money to be made in building residential developments
instead. While 'Generation Enterprise' will create some units
in neighbourhood centres, business spaces across the city need
to be supported in the long term through strong planning regulation.
