Vanunu Freedom Riders Reaches Sheffield
14th April 2007
Cllr Creasy and Cllr
Little will be joining other cyclists from Sheffield to meet the
Vanunu Freedom Riders on Saturday 14th April. They will join the
riders at Meadowhall at 4pm and accompany them to the official
welcome in the Peace Gardens at 4.30 - 5pm. The ride is being
organised by the campaign for freedom for Mordechai Vanunu, who
blew the whistle on Israel's secret nuclear weapons 21 years ago.
It is supported by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Campaign
for Nuclear disarmament who have organised events as it passes
through Sheffield on the way from Faslane to London.
Cllr Creasy said: "We'll be wearing our
Bikes not Bombs vests, which we wore on the cycle ride to Manchester
to protest at the Labour party Conference last autumn. The Green
Party has consistently opposed the war in Iraq, supports the Palestinian
Solidarity Campaign and is wholly against renewing Trident nuclear
missiles.
She went on: "We want to show our
solidarity with people who are concerned about nuclear weapons
in the Middle East and to highlight our government's hypocrisy
on this issue. The UK and USA governments complain about Iran
developing nuclear weapons but don't apply the same rules to themselves.
Mordechai Vanunu stood up to war-mongering in his own country
and has paid a very high price. We support him and all those campaigning
against nuclear weapons wherever they are."
