"Cut C02, Cut Bills" say
Greens
14th April 2007
The Green Party took
an outsized bill to the Town Hall on behalf of the people of Sheffield
today (Saturday 14th April) for the £120 m they waste trying
to keep poorly insulated houses warm. They also took balloons
to represent the extra carbon being released into the atmosphere
as householders turn up the heat - about 400,000 tonnes a year
across the whole city.
Sheffield Green Party is standing candidates
in all 28 wards. Results to watch out for are Central, where sitting
Cllr Jillian Creasy is up for re-election, and Broomhill where
Rob Cole came second with 25% of the vote last year.
Cllr Creasy said: "Domestic heating makes
up a large part of our green house gas emissions and fuel bills
continue to rise. Other local authorities, such as Kirklees, have
been far more active than Sheffield in helping people insulate
their homes. A massive insulation programme would also create
jobs and be good for the local economy".
Broomhill candidate Rob Cole said: "We
need more stringent ecological standards in new developments,
but we also have to make our existing buildings more energy efficient.
We need to save energy as well as capturing renewable sources
such as wind and solar.
