"Energy Saving Even Better than
Turbines" say Greens
27th March 2007
The Green Party has welcomed a report commissioned
by the Council to look into the possibility of building more wind
farms in and around the city, but say we must use less energy
across the board in order to tackle climate change.
Green Cllr Jillian Creasy said The Governments
Energy White Paper says every region must produce 10% of its energy
from renewables by 2010. The key to hitting this target is to
use less energy in the first place. The Council needs to look
to authorities where this has been done successfully. Better insulation
and energy efficient appliances such as low-energy light-bulbs
can have a real impact. The Council can support all of these through
planning guidance, grants and promotion, and make renewable sources
count for more.
Its good news that the Council
is looking seriously into wind energy. Research suggests that
for Sheffield to produce a tenth of what it now consumes though
wind power alone, 30 or 40 more large turbines would have to be
built. Wind turbines are still very controversial and we welcome
the strong lead the Council is taking in the debate."
