Party "Greens Up"
Council Questionnaire
7th March 2007
The Green Party will
be inviting passers-by to fill in their alternative
questionnaires at the Your Council Your Say events
to be held at
different locations in the city this weekend and next. Green Party
co-chair Linda Duckenfield said, Were glad that the
Council are
focussing on the environment after the Sheffield is my Planet
week
last month. But their questionnaire doesnt show how the
Council plans
to take the lead on tackling climate change.
The options for our alternative questions
show what the Council
actually have to do to help us lead greener lives. To improve
public
transport they need to bring in Quality Bus Contracts. As
well as
information about how to save energy people need practical help,
for example in getting their houses insulated. And setting up
a carbon offsetting scheme and hoping it will undo the damage
isnt nearly as effective as cutting down how much pollution
we cause in the first place. So instead we ask people what they
think of setting a carbon footprint of the city and
drawing up a plan for the whole city to help reduce emissions.
The party's other co-chair, Steve Barnard,
added Our Green Councillors Jillian Creasy and Bernard Little
got the Council to include other options on the official
Your Council Your Say forms so Sheffield people had
a real say in what they think should be done. We hope that the
answers to both questionnaires will show that the residents of
this city want real, practical action on climate change, not vague
promises and greenwash .
