Sheffield Greens react to
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
1st
February 2007
Councillor Bernard
Little said, "This authoritative report shows we have
very little time to act.We need to establish how much Sheffield
contributes to climate change by drawing up our carbon footprint
and commit ourselves to a year on year reduction target. The best
science is saying we need a 90% cut in emissions by 2030. This
means a 9% per year cut.
"We need a properly thought out plan for
Sheffield to make it a low carbon economy and start to make those
reductions now. We must focus on insulating our homes, regulating
the buses and localising our economy. There is a free and open
climate change conference called "Live the Cool Life-Imagining
a Greener Sheffield" at St.Mary's, Bramall Lane this Saturday
where Sheffield people can share their ideas on what the city
can do to reduce carbon emissions.
"Al Gore will set a challenge to the business
community on Wednesday and it will be interesting to see if they
are they willing to respond. They must realise that 'business
as usual' is no longer the way forward. "
