Bernard Little Comments on
the Sheffield Council Round Table
17th
January 2007
The key to progress
is better buses and the key to that is re-regulation. The Council
still haven't applied for Quality Contracts in the 2½ years
since the Bus Commission made it possible. Better buses reduce
congestion by tempting commuters out of their cars. They hate
seeing "anti-car" measures such as bus lanes, bus gates,
and parking restrictions but no buses! But the new electronic
info at some bus stops that tells you when the next bus is coming
is great we want more of these please!
We also need more work on travel plans
for businesses and schools. School travel plans would work better
if kids could cross the roads safely, so we also need to improve
facilities for walking, e.g. pedestrian crossings on London, Wolsey
and Abbeydale Rd. Better lighting for pedestrian routes, eg Sheaf
Valley Park (above the station to Park Hill) would encourage people
to use them more.
We need better local rail services, too,
to take pressure off Sheaf Valley corridor. Finally, cyclists
deserve more support. The salary saving scheme that allows them
to offset the cost of a new bike against tax is still not in place
for all Council workers, for example, teachers.
