Waste
Our 'throwaway' culture of disposable goods is
a huge waste of resources and energy. We want waste to be reduced,
reused and recycled as much as possible. The council's private waste
contract is based on burning rubbish in an incinerator and has led
to poor recycling rates, but we believe only things that cannot
be recycled should be sent to the incinerator. The Green Party is
proposing a regional waste strategy, including other South Yorkshire
Councils, to reduce the pressure on them to build more incinerators
and to enable us to fund increases in recycling and reuse.
What is the Green Party doing?
- Getting new bring banks into Central ward
and starting a pilot project for a bring bank on every street.
- Campaigning for waste reduction: e.g. packaging,
plastic carrier bags.
- Campaigning to remove from the incinerator
waste stream: poisons, metals, plastics and textiles, green and
kitchen waste.
- Reporting on the incinerator's carbon footprint
and safety.
- Campaigning for a commercial waste strategy
that includes reduction and recycling targets
- Promoting national and European legislation
for greater
re-use and recycling and stricter controls on waste emissions.
- Encouraging home and community composting.
- Pressing for planning applications to include
recycling facilities
where appropriate, especially in apartment blocks.
