Sheffield and the World
It is vital to "think global, act local".
Real security for all is achieved when
communities and countries work together to promote real justice,
understanding and respect and to increase equality.
We oppose war as a way of resolving international
conflicts. The US, aided by the UK, seeks world domination and is
increasingly involved in conflicts
over scarce resources like oil. Dangerous business, industrial and
agricultural practices create an unequal, unstable, and unhealthy
world. We seek to solve problems that force people to migrate to
other countries, and call for fair treatment locally and nationally
for refugees. We are an international party, working with Green
Parties throughout the world.
In Sheffield
We want to use Sheffield's position as the fourth
largest city in England to influence all other local authorities,
the UK Government and international
organisations like the European Union and the United Nation to tackle
issues like climate change, and to promote peace and defend human
rights. Where necessary we will take the lead on these and other
key issues.
The Green Party will:
- Raise crucial issues of climate change
and energy at full Council Meetings.
- Support the conversion of local manufacture
and research connected to the arms trade to civilian contracts,
possibly developing the new technologies needed to stop climate
change.
- Promote learning about global issues, such
as the links between North and South, through schools, the Sheffield
International Committee, the Development Education Centre and
the Multilingual City Forum
Our Green Councillors will:
- Support companies
committed to providing local jobs, and oppose jobs being moved
elsewhere.
- Press for Sheffield to re-join the Nuclear
Free Local Authorities group.
- Promote an affordable housing policy which
makes it easier for asylum seekers and local homeless people to
find suitable accommodation.
