1 Understand
A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact
our activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of
greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide.
A Carbon Footprint consists of two parts, the primary (direct) and
the secondary (indirect) footprint.
- The primary footprint measures our direct
emissions of CO2 from burning fossil fuels including domestic
energy consumption and transportation.
- The secondary footprint measures the indirect
CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use - those
associated with their manufacture and eventual breakdown.
An Ecological Footprint measures the human impact
on the planet's environmental resources. It is measured in ha (hectares)
Typically an individual in Sheffield uses 5.4 hectares, whereas
the global average is 2.2
