Green Party says no to renewing Trident

Town Hall

19 March 2007

Dear Sir,

The decision to replace Trident nuclear missiles will disappoint many people in Sheffield. We used to be a member of Nuclear Free Local Authorities. The Lib Dems withdrew the council from NFLA and Labour recently rejected a Green Party motion calling to rejoin. Not a single Sheffield Labour MP voted to scrap Trident in the recent House of Commons debate.

The Green Party is absolutely opposed to renewing Trident. Spending billions on a weapon which could never be used is madness. The biggest threats we face now are from climate change and terrorist attacks. A nuclear deterrent will not prevent either of these ; the money would be better spent on projects to create a more just and sustainable world.

Yours sincerely

Cllr Jillian Creasy,
Sheffield Green Party
